The battery pack is by far the most expensive single component in an electric car. Replace one outside warranty and the bill can run into thousands of pounds — in some cases a meaningful fraction of what the whole car is worth. That one fact changes how you should shop for a used EV: an EV battery health check tells you more about what you're buying than almost anything else on the advert, the mileage included.
On a petrol or diesel car, the odometer is a reasonable shorthand for wear. On an electric car it isn't. A motorway car that has covered high miles on gentle overnight charging can have a healthier battery than a low-mileage city runabout that lived on rapid chargers. The number that actually describes the car's condition is the battery's state of health.

EV battery state of health (SoH): the number that matters
State of health is the battery's usable capacity today expressed as a percentage of its capacity when new. A brand-new pack sits at 100%; as the cells age and cycle, the capacity — and with it the real-world range — gradually shrinks. An EV whose battery has fallen to, say, four fifths of its original capacity will travel roughly four fifths as far on a full charge as it did when it left the factory.
Don't confuse state of health with state of charge. State of charge is the fuel-gauge reading — how full the battery is right now. State of health is the size of the tank itself. A car can show 100% charged and still have a tired battery.
The reassuring news is the shape of the curve. Lithium-ion packs typically lose capacity fastest in their first few years, after which degradation slows markedly and flattens out. Large-scale studies of EV fleets have generally found average capacity loss running at low single-digit percentages a year once that early settling period is over. Modern packs are also managed by a battery management system (BMS) that keeps the cells inside safe limits, and most manufacturers build in a hidden buffer of capacity the driver never touches — both of which are why catastrophic battery failures are far rarer than early sceptics predicted.
What accelerates EV battery degradation
How a battery was treated matters more than how far it travelled. The main culprits:
- Constant DC rapid charging. Occasional rapid charging on a long trip does no meaningful harm, but a car that relied on rapid chargers as its main source of energy has had a harder life than one charged slowly at home.
- Heat. High temperatures are the enemy of lithium-ion cells — whether from climate, from repeated rapid-charge sessions back to back, or from a car with limited battery cooling.
- Habitual 100%-to-0% use. Regularly charging to full and running the pack close to empty stresses the cells. Owners who kept the battery in the middle of its range for daily use — the widely recommended practice — preserved it best.
- Long periods parked at full or empty. Sitting for weeks at 100% charge, or flat, ages cells faster than sitting half-charged.
- Battery chemistry and cooling design. Cars with liquid-cooled packs generally hold up better than early air-cooled designs, and LFP chemistry tolerates routine 100% charging in a way that older nickel-based chemistries don't. Two cars of the same age can age very differently for reasons that have nothing to do with the driver.
When you view a used EV, ask the seller how it was charged. "Home charger, topped up overnight" is the answer you want to hear. A car with no home charging and a life on public rapids deserves a closer look at its state of health before you commit.
How long does an EV battery last?
This is where the electric car battery life question gets misunderstood. Batteries don't fail like a clutch or a turbo — they fade. A pack that has lost capacity still works perfectly well; it just does fewer miles between charges. In practice most EV packs are expected to outlast the useful life of the rest of the car, which is why the early fear of a wholesale battery replacement at seven or eight years hasn't materialised at anything like the predicted rate.
Two things change the maths on an older car. First, sudden faults — a single failed module or a cooling problem — are far more common than uniform "wear out", and they can often be repaired at module level rather than by replacing the entire pack. Second, an independent EV repair sector has grown up in the UK alongside the franchised network, so a pack fault outside warranty is no longer automatically a main-dealer-price job. Replacement and repair costs vary enormously by model and by what actually failed, so treat headline figures with suspicion and get a written quote for the specific car.
EV battery warranties: the safety net
The battery has its own warranty, separate from — and much longer than — the general vehicle warranty. Across the industry the typical cover is around eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, and most manufacturers pair it with a capacity guarantee: if the battery's state of health drops below a threshold — commonly around 70% of original capacity — within the warranty period, they will repair or replace it.
Those are typical terms, not universal ones, so before buying any specific car, confirm:
- The exact terms for that model — duration, mileage cap and the capacity threshold that triggers a claim.
- The start date. Battery warranties run from first registration, not from when you buy the car. A six-year-old EV has perhaps two years of cover left.
- Whether it transfers to you. Most battery warranties follow the car to subsequent owners, but check — and check whether any conditions apply, such as servicing history or repairs at approved workshops.
- How capacity is measured for a claim. Manufacturers rely on their own diagnostic reading, not the range estimate on the dashboard.

How to check EV battery health: five methods
An electric vehicle battery health check can mean anything from a ten-second glance at a dashboard readout to a certified diagnostic report. These are the five practical options, in increasing order of effort and reliability.
1. The car's own display or app
Some EVs show battery health directly. The best-known example is the Nissan Leaf, which displays a row of capacity bars alongside the charge gauge — a Leaf that has lost bars has measurably lost capacity, and the number of bars remaining is the first thing experienced Leaf buyers look at. Other manufacturers expose a state of health figure in the infotainment menus, in a service or diagnostics screen, or in the owner's smartphone app. Check the handbook, or search the menus on your test drive — if the car will tell you its own SoH, that's the easiest evidence there is.
2. OBD-II EV battery diagnostic apps
Where the car doesn't display SoH, the data usually still exists inside the battery management system. A cheap OBD-II dongle plugged into the diagnostic port, paired with an EV-specific battery health checker app on your phone, can read the BMS directly and report state of health, cell voltages, cell balance and battery temperature. App support is model-specific, so check that the tool you buy actually covers the car you're viewing.
Treat third-party readings as a good estimate rather than gospel — different tools calculate SoH slightly differently, and a reading taken on a cold pack or straight after a rapid charge can flatter or penalise the car. As a buyer's screening tool, though, they are excellent, and many private sellers will happily let you plug one in.
3. The practical range test
The low-tech check: charge the car to 100%, note the predicted range, and compare it with the official WLTP figure for that exact model and battery size. Better still, drive a known route and compare the miles covered against the charge consumed. Apply the caveats honestly, though:
- Real-world range is normally below the WLTP laboratory figure even on a healthy new car — a shortfall against WLTP is not, on its own, proof of degradation.
- Cold weather temporarily cuts range on every EV. A winter range test will read low without the battery having lost any permanent capacity.
- The predicted range on the dashboard is calculated from recent driving, so a car that's just done a fast motorway run will show a pessimistic number.
- Speed, heating, load and driving style all move the numbers. Compare like with like.
4. Charge-session maths
A more objective home test, if you can borrow the car for a charge. Note the state of charge before and after a full session on a home charger or a smart plug that reports energy delivered, then compare the kWh that went in with the pack's nominal usable capacity. Charging from roughly 20% to 100% should take in something close to four fifths of the usable capacity on a healthy pack; markedly less suggests the tank has shrunk. Allow for charging losses, which are real and vary with temperature, and treat the result as a cross-check on the other methods rather than a verdict.
5. A professional EV battery test
For a purchase decision on an expensive car, a written report beats an app estimate. A franchised dealer can run the manufacturer's own battery diagnostic, and a growing number of independent EV specialists offer battery health certificates: a diagnostic session that reads the BMS and produces a documented state of health figure, often with cell-balance detail and stored fault codes. Electric car battery testing of this kind is not standardised the way an MOT is, so ask what the report actually measures and which tool produced it. The cost is modest next to the price of getting the decision wrong.

One thing no tool can do: read state of health from a registration number. SoH lives inside the car's battery management system, so any "EV battery health checker" that claims to produce a percentage from a number plate alone isn't measuring the battery. A registration-based check answers a different — and equally important — set of questions about the car's history.
Step by step: an electric car battery health check on a viewing
Put the methods above into a running order and a viewing takes about half an hour. This is the sequence we'd use:
- Before you travel, ask the seller to have the car charged to 100% (or as near as they're comfortable) and look up the WLTP range and usable battery capacity for that exact trim and battery size.
- Ask how it was charged and used — home charger or public rapids, commuting or motorway, and whether it has spent long periods standing.
- Photograph the dashboard at full charge: state of charge, predicted range, odometer.
- Dig through the menus and the app for a state of health or capacity readout, and note any battery-related warning messages.
- Plug in an OBD-II dongle if the car supports it, and record SoH, cell voltage spread and any stored fault codes. A wide voltage spread between cells matters as much as the headline percentage.
- Drive it properly. Use the energy consumption display over a mixed route, check that regenerative braking behaves consistently, and watch for the pack refusing full power or full regen once warm.
- Check the charging hardware, not just the battery — try a charge if you can, inspect the charge port and flap for damage, and confirm the cables are with the car.
- Match the evidence to the paperwork — service history, remaining battery warranty, and an independent history check on the vehicle itself.
EV battery check before buying: what to ask the seller
Whatever you measure yourself, the seller usually holds better evidence. When buying from a dealer, put the battery on the table explicitly:
- Ask for a recent battery health report with the SoH figure in writing, dated, and with the testing method named. Many EV-savvy dealers now advertise one; if they don't, ask them to run the test — in front of you, or as a condition of sale.
- Ask for the battery warranty documentation — remaining term, the capacity threshold, and confirmation it transfers to you.
- Ask about software and recall work. Battery behaviour is heavily software-dependent, and outstanding manufacturer campaigns or updates should be done before you take the car.
- Get any verbal claims in writing. "The battery is fine" on the invoice is worth far more than the same words across the desk.
In a private sale, ask the owner for a screenshot from the manufacturer's app or an OBD-II reading, and factor the cost of an independent test into your negotiation if they can't provide one. A seller who refuses any form of electric car battery check is telling you something.
EV battery health checks for car dealers in the UK
For the trade the argument is commercial rather than technical. A used EV with a documented SoH figure in the advert answers the single biggest objection an electric car buyer has, and it protects the dealer as much as the customer: under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a used car must be of satisfactory quality and as described, and a battery in materially worse condition than the advert implied is a dispute waiting to happen. A dated test result on the vehicle file is the cheapest possible defence.
- Test at appraisal, not at handover. A SoH reading taken when the car is bought in prices the stock correctly and stops surprises later.
- Standardise on one tool so figures are comparable across the forecourt, and record the method alongside the percentage — there is no single official UK battery health standard, so an unattributed number means little.
- Record the remaining battery warranty — months and miles left, and the transfer conditions — next to the SoH figure.
- Publish it. Buyers are actively searching for battery health information; a dealer who volunteers it removes the reason to walk away and compare.
Hybrid battery health check: what's different
A hybrid battery health check follows different rules. Conventional (self-charging) hybrids have a battery far smaller than an EV's, it is never plugged in, and the car's software works it gently — cycling it within a narrow band of charge rather than running it full to empty. That's why hybrid batteries routinely last well into old age. But they do degrade, and because there's no range figure to watch, the signs are subtler.
Signs a hybrid battery is on the way out
- Fuel consumption creeps up. The battery can store and release less energy, so the petrol engine has to do more of the work.
- The engine cuts in more often, and stays on longer — especially at low speeds where the car used to glide on electric power alone.
- The battery gauge swings rapidly from full to empty and back, a classic sign of lost capacity.
- Electric-only running shrinks to a few hundred metres or disappears entirely.
- The cooling fan works harder. Many hybrids cool the pack with a fan drawing cabin air; a blocked intake — often behind a rear seat or parcel shelf — is a classic cause of premature ageing, and worth a look on any older example.
How to test a hybrid battery
On a test drive, watch the energy display and listen for the engine at parking speeds: a healthy hybrid should move off and manoeuvre on electric power alone with the battery part-charged. For hard evidence, hybrid specialists can run a diagnostic that reads the individual cell blocks and flags weak or imbalanced ones — the same OBD-II approach used on EVs, and well worth doing on an older, high-mileage example. Because hybrid packs are built from many small modules, a single weak block is a common and often repairable fault rather than a write-off.
Hybrid battery warranties follow a similar shape to EV cover, and some manufacturers will extend hybrid battery protection year by year if the car passes an annual hybrid health check at a franchised dealer, up to a published maximum age. It's one of the few cases where a full main-dealer service record is worth real money on a used car, so ask whether the car you're viewing still qualifies and what happens if a year was missed.
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)
A plug-in hybrid sits between the two. Its battery is bigger than a self-charging hybrid's, it is charged from the mains, and it does get cycled deeply — which means it degrades more like an EV pack. Check it like one: charge it to full, compare the electric-only range shown with the official figure for that model, and be alert to the common PHEV problem of a car that has never been plugged in at all. A PHEV used purely as a petrol car for years may have a serviceable battery but a neglected charging system, and the electric range on the advert may be theoretical.
Not the same thing: the 12V car battery health check
Search for a car battery health check and you'll get two completely different subjects. Everything above concerns the high-voltage traction pack. But every EV and hybrid also carries a conventional 12V battery, and it does a job that matters just as much day to day: it powers the lights, locks, alarm and infotainment, and it wakes the high-voltage system when you press start.
A flat or failing 12V battery is one of the most common reasons an electric car simply won't respond — no drive, no unlock, sometimes no charging either — and it has nothing to do with state of health. The symptoms look alarming and can easily be mistaken for a catastrophic pack fault: a car that's been standing for a fortnight, a dashboard full of warnings, an infotainment screen that reboots. Any garage can test a 12V battery in minutes with a conventional battery tester, and replacing one costs a fraction of what the panic suggests.
Viewing a used EV that has been sitting on a forecourt for weeks? If the car is sluggish to wake or throws a spread of unrelated warnings, ask when the 12V battery was last tested or replaced before you write the car off.
Does the MOT check EV battery health?
No. Electric cars need an MOT from three years old like anything else, and the test covers the usual ground — brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension and structure — plus a visual inspection of the electrical installation and battery security. What it does not do is measure the traction battery's state of health or its remaining capacity. A clean MOT tells you nothing at all about how much range the car has lost, which is exactly why a separate battery check exists. The test record is still worth reading, though: EVs pass without an emissions test, but a MOT history check shows every advisory, failure and recorded mileage — a quick read on how the rest of the car has been kept.
The battery isn't the whole story: check the history too
A perfect state of health report on the wrong car is still the wrong car. An electric vehicle battery check answers one question; the car's paperwork answers the rest. EVs go through the same used market as everything else, which means the same risks: cars written off and repaired, cars with money still owing, clocked odometers and sellers who aren't the keeper. Before any money moves:
- Start with a free car check to confirm the car's identity — make, model, colour, MOT and tax status — against official records.
- Run a mileage check across the MOT history. Mileage fraud isn't only about wear on an EV — a clocked odometer can also make a car appear to sit inside its battery warranty mileage cap when it doesn't.
- Check keepers, write-off records and outstanding finance with a full vehicle check — if a lender still has an interest in the car, the battery warranty is the least of your problems. Flood and fire damage deserve particular attention on an EV, given where the pack sits.
